The gingerbread disaster of 2009

I have always wanted to make a gingerbread house with my kids. I had visions of creating a mini masterpiece. There would be icing icicles, an M&M sidewalk and sculpted gumdrop trees. Eventually reality settled in and I realized that my dream would never play out...at least not in the immediate future. I did decide we could probably handle making a gingerbread house from a kit though and that is exactly what we did...twice.

The kit for gingerbread house #1 was brought out with much fanfare. I figured we would make it while Lily and Noah took their afternoon naps. I failed to realize that the particular kit I bought required hours of prep work! Yep, hours! The instructions called for adhering each piece of the house together with icing and allowing it to set for several hours each time! Long story short, Lily and Noah were wide awake and it was dinnertime by the time we were ready to actually decorate the house. I tried to distract Noah with umpteen Cheerios while I hovered over the girls (yes, Lily too) as they decorated the gingerbread house. It seemed to take forever but then it was finally finished! They did pretty well. We decided to ignore the wall that fell in...that's what happens when a two year old decides to help decorate.

All was well. The girls were thrilled with their mini masterpiece and I managed to survive with minimal fuss and screeching. Then it happened....I was rushing to get the table cleared so we could eat dinner and disaster struck! I dropped the gingerbread house! Can you believe it? I started laughing. What else could I do? Megan and Lily promptly screamed and freaked out. Annie managed to hold it together. I pulled myself up by my boot straps and promised a new gingerbread house to decorate ASAP and that seemed to calm them down.

Eventually, we did manage to get another gingerbread house kit. The good news is that this particular kit did not require hours of prep work so we were able to decorate it as soon as the little ones went off to bed. Annie and Megan enjoyed themselves and were quite proud with the results.

The best news is that I didn't drop this one!

  1. Enjoyed your post Shelby- if we didn't laugh at real life, it would wear us out! I found you via a fluke, but you are friends with my sister I think. I look forward to following you.
